Why little traditions matter

Psychologist Barbara Fiese separates routines, the things that just have to get done, from rituals, the things that say "this is who we are." When she and her colleagues reviewed fifty years of studies on family routines and rituals, they found them linked to children's adjustment, to parents feeling more confident and to couples being happier together.

Parent Review Night is built for repair, not grades. The questions ask about feelings and wishes, and the grown-up's only answer is "Thank you for telling me." Psychologist Ed Tronick argues that what strengthens a relationship is repairing the moments that go wrong, not avoiding them.

Questions

Good to know

What do I get after I buy?

Four PDF files: US Letter and A4, each in full color and an ink-saver version. Every file has all 24 pages. Download them right away and print as many copies as your family needs.

What ages is it for?

Families with kids from about 3 to 12. Every tradition has a version for little ones and ideas older kids can lead. Grandparents are always welcome.

Do we have to start in January?

No. Start with whatever month you're in, or pick the tradition that sounds most fun. Each page stands on its own.

Does it cost much to do the traditions?

Almost nothing. Most use blankets, flashlights, a simple supper and things you already have at home. Every tradition is screen-free.

Is it tied to any holidays?

No. The traditions follow the seasons and the light of the year, so every family can use them.

Can I get a refund?

Because this is a digital download that can't be returned, sales are generally final. If something is wrong with your files, they won't open, or you bought the wrong item by mistake, just write to us and we will make it right.
